North West Woodcraft Guild Inc.
March 2008
This has been the hardest Newsletter for me to compile. Last month we lost Harry (see Rob’s Note below )
“Unfortunately we have not started the new year on a high note with the passing of Harry Clark. Harry has been a great friend to many of us in the Guild and has always been a valuable member. Harry’s health suffered a lot in recent years but he would still make a point of calling in to chat with members at the workshop; usually on his way to or from the Lions club shop or garage sales where he would collect unwanted goods for the Lions. Harry would often entertain us with his humorous recollections of his days as a country cop. It was a pleasure to be involved in these chats and I know I will continue to recall and chuckle at many of his stories. Harry was part of the Guilds executive committee for many years. He could be relied upon to regularly throw in a curve ball to keep the rest of the committee on their toes. There were many times where he would start a debate that would continue on as he sat back looking pleased with himself.
Harry had a creative mind and was very encouraging of others to get in and have a go. Many of his projects were abstract carvings where he allowed the wood to guide his mind and hands to produce the final result.
During a brief conversation on the night before he died Harry made the point that he has thoroughly enjoyed his involvement in the Guild over the past 18 years. I know I speak for many of us in saying that we also have thoroughly enjoyed his involvement with the Guild. I can honestly say it has been a privilege to have known Harry Clark and my life has been enriched by his friendship.”

We are saying goodbye to Elizabeth Ryan. Her husband is finishing his locum work in Ulverstone and they are returning to Queensland shortly. We hope she has enjoyed her time with the Guild and look forward to seeing her again in the future.

I have included the new Roster. It has been very hard to compile with so many members or family members ill. A number away or going on holidays. AND. Although I did ask in the last newsletter if you would let me know which day and week of the month you would prefer to work and also if you are going on holidays, very few took the time to pass this on to me. I hope you do respond this time by the end of March if possible. Sudden Illness or Doctor’s appointments are things that we have no control over, but this can be organized
There is also a list for members suggestions as to what they would like to be shown on these days/nights and also ideas for activities on other working days.
We hope more members will bring show and tell items to the meetings, even mistakes or something you may need help with.
They usually have a very nice meal. Please include payment with your acceptance, as we have to pay for all meals booked.
Saturday March 16th. Geoff Metcalf will be showing various Jigs and aids that he uses for
his furniture making and also for use with his router.
Sunday April 20th. A day at the Milburn’s workshop. 68 Clara St. West Ulverstone. 10am
Onwards. Various aspects of woodworking will shown. I hope to be able to arrange something for the ladies as well. Please bring your own lunch. There is a Barbeque available.
Tea and coffee provided.

2008 EXHIBITION
The new Exhibition Committee was elected (volunteered) at the last meeting.
They are Helen Gillie, Stewart Mearns, Peter Fell, Rob Van Tholen, Ray Attrill, Leanne Midgley, Lexia and Peter Butler, Kath, Pat and Laurie Milburn.
One of the most urgent things to decide will be the Competition. After the success of last years’ Beautiful Boxes we need ideas for something different that has a range of different skills, something we can turn, carve, scrollsaw or build. There is a list on the notice board and your ideas will be needed by Easter. We need to be able to get entry forms underway in April.
Ideas for other activities at the Exhibition would be welcome. We would be grateful for the donation of 2nd and 3rd.prizes for the Raffle.
New Security Feature; Door Chimes By now most of you will have seen and heard our new warning chimes and lights. Thank you Ray for organizing same.
Book for Borrowed Items This is now in the Main room, attached to the notice Board near the workshop door. Please note. Videos and books to be taken out for a period of one month, Tools must be returned next open day.
Please Note. Minutes of meetings and Financial reports are placed on the large notice board each month, for your information.
Thank you to those who helped out at short notice over the past few topsy-turvy weeks.
